Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

State the word equation for respiration

A

Q

Air rich in oxygen that is breathed in enters the alveoli. Air rich in carbon dioxide is breathed out. Describe the event that occur.

A

Via gas exchange across the thin walls of the alveoli. Moves by a process called Diffusion. Oxygen into the blood. Carbon dioxide waste move from cells into blood and diffuses into alveoli and is breathed out during next exhale.

Q

Describe the function of the diaphragm

A

When you inhale the diaphragm contracts and flattens which increased the volume inside your chest - lungs expand and air pressure decreases.

Reverse for exhale. - diaphragm arches up - volume returns to normal, air pressure increased, air expelled.

Q

Explain why humans die within minutes if they cant breathe but they can live for days without food or water.

A

Because a build up of carbon dioxide harms your body. It would harm your body if you did not get rid of it.

Q

What happens to your breathing rate when you start walking and then up to running and then stop. Describe what is happening.

A

Rate will increase when walking and then more again when running.
The more energy your body requires then greater the demand for oxygen which is only achieved though an increased breathing rate.

Q

What is the difference between breathing and respiration

A

Breathing is the action of inhaling and exhaling air - breathing is involuntary.
Respiration is the chemical process (Oxygen + Glucose —> Carbon Dioxide (CO2) + Water + Energy)
