List the organs of the digestive tract in order from the start to the finish
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, large intestine, small intestine, anus
List the organs that are part of the digestive system but not part of the digestive tract
Liver, pancreas, and gall bladder
State how the liver, pancreas and gall bladder contribution to digestion
Liver - produces bile which is responsible for the chemical digestion of fats. Liver also removes toxins such as alcohol
Pancreas - produces pancreatic juice which contains chemicals that help digest carbohydrates, fats and proteins
Gall bladder - ?
Name 3 disorders of the digestive system (4 included)
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Appendicitis
Heartburn
Describe the process of peristalsis
The rhythmic contracting and relaxing of the muscles of the oesophagus that keeps food moving through the digestive system
Explain how the structure of the following organs make them well suited to the job they do:
Stomach
Small intestine
Stomach - mechanical and chemical breakdown of good. shaped like a bag, muscle walls contract and relax churning up the food (mechanical), mixes with gastric juices (chemical)
Small intestine- very long narrow tube. Responsible for digested food absorb into the body through tiny fingers called villi
What happens to most of the harmful bacteria that enter the digestive system?
Killed by the hydrochloride acid in gastric juice
Describe what can happen if too many harmful bacteria enter the system?
Vomiting and Diarrhoea will expel them
