Respiration Flashcards
Describe the use of the ‘iron lung’
The ‘iron lung’ is used for people with polio who were paralysed. The person lay with their chest sealed in a large metal cylinder. When are was drawn out of the cylinder the person’ schist moved out and they breathed in. The vacuum which was formed inside the the splinter crests a negative pressure, when air is pumped back into the cylinder it creates pressure on the chest and forces air out do the persons lungs
Describe the use of positive pressure breathing aids
They force measured amounts of air into the lunges by positive pressure. Bags of air are linked to masks can force air down the trachea
Give an advantage of a positive breathing aid compared with the iron lung
They are often smaller, easier to mange in the home and can be linked to computers for control
What the several breathing aids which have been developed?
‘Iron lung’
Positive pressure breathing aids
Advantages of positive pressure
Useful during operations, where surgeons need access to the body
Disadvantages of the positive pressure
Effective at ventilating the lungs
Long-term ventilation requires the tube to be surgically inserted into the trachea through the neck
Advantages of iron lung (negative pressure)
Effective at treating many polio patients over the years
Disadvantages of iron lung (negative pressure)
Patient is confined to the machine
The vacuum on full-body machines can affect the abdomen, leading to the pooling of blood in lower parts of the body
