Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

Why is ATP described as universal energy currency?

A
  • it’s used a source of energy in all cells in all chemical reactions
  • provides energy released as ‘ small packets ‘

Q

Advantages of ATP?

A
  • easily transported in membrane
  • 1 enzyme needed to release energy from ATP
  • easily hydrolysed
  • releases energy in small amounts when/where needed
  • hydrolysis of ATP to ADP involves single reaction that releases energy immediately

Q

How does ATP carry energy?

A
  • atp is synthesised from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) & an inorganic phosphate using energy broken down by glucose
  • atp moves to part of cell that requires energy
  • then broken down to ADP and inorganic phosphate (Pi) & releases energy for process to use
  • The ADP and phosphate are recycled and process starts again
