Acids and Bases Flashcards
What is a base?
• a proton acceptor
Common bases?
- metal oxides
- metal hydroxides
- ammonia
Definition of a salt?
• when the H+ of an acid is replaced by a metal ion or NH4+
What is an alkali?
• it’s a base that dissolves in water
Common alkalis?
- sodium hydroxide
* potassium hydroxide
Why is the reagent that’s not in excess called the limiting factor?
• because it limits how much product can be made
Meaning of a strong acids?
• it’s molecules fully dissociates
Definition of a weak acid?
• it’s molecules partially dissociates
What is the nH20 in an hydrated salt?
• the water of crystallisation
What does anhydrous mean?
• the salt doesn’t contain water: there are no water of crystallisation
Meaning of a hydrated salt?
• salt that has water:
There are water of crystallisation
Calculating the formula of the hydrated salt from mass of hydrated and mass of anhydrous salt?
• Mr of anhydrous • moles of anhydrous • mr of water • mass of water • moles of water Then divide by the smallest number
Acids + base?
• = salt and water
Acid + metal?
• = salt and hydrogen
Acid + alkali?
• = salt and water
