Respiration Flashcards
What is the effect of the SNS on the lungs?
Increases breathing rate by increasing the resistance of flow into the lungs due to constriction of the pulmonary veins and vessels, bronchial tubes also widen
What is the effect of the PSNS on the lungs?
Slows breathing rate by contracting bronchial tubes and widening pulmonary blood vessels
In both the sympathetic and parasympathetic system, what receptors are stimulated or inhibited in the lungs?
Pulmonary stretch receptor
What are the two airways that split up the mammalian lungs, give the parts involved and a definition of what occurs here?
Conduction zone
- trachea, primary bronchi, secondary bronchi, bronchioles
- no gas exchange occurs here, just gas being conducted in and out of lungs
Respiratory zone
- alveoli
- where gas exchange occurs between alveoli and pulmonary capillaries
Conducting zone functions:
Trachea
Primary Bronchi
Secondary Bronchi
Bronchioles
Trachea: allows the passage of inspired and expired air in and out of the lungs
Primary Bronchi: moisturise air and screen for pathogens
Primary, Secondary, Bronchioles: conduction of air
