Respiration Flashcards
Where does respiration happen?
In all cells of all living organisms
Why do cells need respiration?
To carry out all their activities
What are the 2 types of respiration?
Aerobic and anaerobic
What is the definition of aerobic respiration?
Respiration in which oxygen combines with glucose (food) to release energy, water and carbon dioxide
Aerobic respiration word equation
Glucose + oxygen = energy + water + carbon dioxide
Aerobic respiration chemical equation
C6H12O6 + oxygen = energy + 6H2O + 6CO2
What processes is aerobic respiration used in?
- Muscle contractions which enable us to move
- Growth
- Production of heat to keep us warm
- Sending nerve impulses along nerve cells
- Cell division
- Cells joining amino acids together to make proteins
- Transport of substances across cell membranes
What is the definition of anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen
Anaerobic respiration word equation
yeast
Glucose ——–> Carbon dioxide + alcohol + energy
Differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic————Anaerobic
-Uses O2…………-Doesn’t use O2
-Lots of energy…….-Less energy
-Makes 6H2O, CO2..-Makes alcohol, CO2
What do you call anaerobic respiration which uses yeast?
Fermentation
What 2 processes is fermentation used in?
- Making alcoholic drinks
- Baking bread and cakes
How is yeast used to make alcoholic drinks?
It is used to break down sugar in fruit juice
Difference between fizzy and still alcohol
Fizzy=CO2 has been allowed to stay in the bottle still=CO2 has been allowed to escape the bottle
Difference between sweet and dry alcohol
sweet=not all the sugar has been broken down dry=all the sugar has been broken down
How does bread rise? What happens to the alcohol?
CO2 makes bubbles in the dough, allowing it to rise. The alcohol evaporates in the oven.
When does anaerobic respiration in the muscles take place?
When the body needs energy quick, usually during intense exercise
Anaerobic respiration in muscles word equation
Glucose——>Lactic acid + energy
Lactic acid is toxic, what does it cause in our bodies?
Painful cramps and tiredness
What organ breaks lactic acid down and what does it use to break it down?
The liver, it uses O2
What is oxygen debt (definition)?
The volume of oxygen needed break down lactic acid in muscles that was produced during anaerobic respiration.
