Respiration Flashcards
What is Respiration?
Chemical reaction that uses oxygen to release the energy in food.
What is energy?
Something has energy if it has the ability to make something happen when energy is transferred
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration that involves oxygen
How do we get glucose?
We get glucose from the food we eat
How do we get oxygen?
We need oxygen by inhaling the air
How do we get rid of carbon dioxide?
We get rid of carbon dioxide by exhaling
How do we get rid of water?
We get rid of water by sweating and urinating
Where does aerobic respiration occur?
Aerobic respiration occurs in a specific organelle called a mitochondria
Where in the Mitochondria does Aerobic respiration occur?
In the inner membrane
How is the surface area of the inner membrane increased?
Surface area of inner membrane is increased in structures called ‘cristae’, which are just folds
How do you know how active a cell is?
The number of mitochondria in a cell will tell you how active it is
What do organisms need respiration for?
1.Building molecules- Growth and repair
2.Movement- muscular contraction
3.Staying warm
4.Active transport- Root hair cells in plant roots use active transport to absorb mineral ions(such as nitrates) from the soil(used for proteins/DNA)
What is the fluid inside the mitochondria called?
The matrix, containing enzymes needed for respiration
What happens relating to mitochondria disease?
-Little or no respiration occurs
-Organs like the heart, liver and brain are badly affected
-The symptoms depends on which mitochondria are affected
-This is due to genetics
Mitochondria adaptions to respiration
Highly folded for larger surface area and enzymes to speed up reaction
