Plants and Ecosystems Flashcards
Why are plants important?
- Food directly or indirectly(an animal that has eaten plants)
- Raw materials for fabrics, buildings and biofuel
- Medicine
- Decoration
- Removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen into the atmosphere
- Takes up toxic substances
What do plants need to grow?
Carbon dioxide( abundant in the atmosphere)
Oxygen(for respiration)
Water
Sunlight
Nutrients
Photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide+Water= Oxygen and Glucose
Where does photosynthesis occur?
Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts
What is photosynthesis used for?
Plants use the products of photosynthesis for energy
What are leaves for?
- The function of leaves is photosynthesis
What is an adaptation?
An adaption is any part or characteristics that helps a species survive or reproduce
Name 3 leaf adaptions
- Leaves are broad
- They are thin
- They have specialised cells
What are 3 adaptions of the cuticle?
- Waxy substance
- Also transparent
- Waterproof and protects the surface of the plant
What is the function of the epidermis?
It allows light to reach the palisade cells
What are the adaptions of the epidermis?
It is thin and transparent
How does the Epidermis’ adaptions allow it to carry out its function?
Light is able to pass through
What is the function of Palisade Cells?
Palisade Cells absorb light
What are adaptions of the Palisade Cells?
- At the top of the cell
- Long and narrow cells
- Contains many chloroplasts, concentrated at the top of the cell
How do the Palisade Cell’s adaptions allow it to carry out its function?
- So light doesn’t have far to travel
- To absorb as much light as possible
