Respiration Flashcards
Glucose from digested food is a…
An energy resource for cells
Why do cells need energy?
To function, grow and divide to make your body work.
What do cells use?
A chemical reaction called respiration.
What does respiration do?
Used to release energy from food (gluscose).
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration where energy is released with oxygen.
What’s the balanced chemical equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O
What’s the equation for respiration?
Glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide +energy + water
What is a myocardial infarction?
A heart attack
What causes heart attacks?
Build up of plaque leading to blockages.
When these blockages chip what do they cause?
Blood clots
When there’s a blood clot, what happens?
The cells can’t get oxygen to the heart and so they die.
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction inside living cells controlled by enzymes releasing energy from glucose in a controlled manner.
What is breathing?
The mechanical movement of air moving in and out of the lungs.
What does breathing result in?
The diffusion of oxygen in our blood and carbon dioxide out of our blood.
What is gaseous exchange?
Oxygen in. Carbon dioxide out.
