Respiration Flashcards
What is cell respiration
Controlled release of energy from organic compounds
What are the differences between anaerobic and aerobic respiration
Anaerobic involves the partial breakdown of glucose to in cytosol release a small amount of ATP, aerobic utilises oxygen to fully breakdown glucose in the mitochondria for a larger ATP yield
What is the equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 +6H20 + ATP
What is ATP?
High energy molecule that functions as an immediate source of power for cell processes
What is glycolysis
The anaerobic breakdown of glucose in the cytosol
What does anaerobic respiration produce
In animals lactic acid, in plants co2 and ethanol
How many ATP does aerobic respiration produce
~36
How does respirometry work?
Measures the rate of exchange of CO2 and O2 in order to determine an organisms respiration rate
What are the factors that will effect respiration?
Temp, hydration, light, age and activity levels
What are the steps of using a respirometer ?
Living specimen is enclosed in a sealed container
CO2 is measured by a data logger or by measuring the Ph if the organism is submerged in water
Il an alkali is included to absorb CO2 , O2 consumption can be measured as a change in pressure within the system by a data logger or a u-tube nanometer
What would mean more respiration when using a respirometer?
More CO2 = more respiration
Less O2 = more respiration
Where does glycolysis occur?
Cytoplasm
What does glycolysis produce
Glucose (6-c) —> pyruvate 2(3c)
