Respiration Flashcards
Aerobic respiration
Needs oxygen, It is the release of a large amount of energy in cells by the breakdown of food substances in the presence of oxygen. (Sounds like air so needs air)
Anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration happens all the time in animals and plants. This happens in the mitochondria
What is respiration
a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.
What is the chemical word equation for anaerobic respiration
glucose → lactic acid
What is the chemical word equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
Inspiration (breathing in)
Diaphragm contracts, The internal intercostal muscles relax, ribcage up and out. The chest volume increases decreasing pressure.
Expiration (breathing out)
The diaphragm relaxes, The internal intercostal muscles contract, the ribcage downwards and in ,the chest volume decreases increasing pressure
What happens when you exercise (rate of breathing)
An increase in breathing rate increases gas exchange in the lungs, with more oxygen taken in and more carbon dioxide released.
