Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
Chemical reaction that occurs in mitochondria off all living cells to release energy for living functions and processes
What type of reaction is it? (Exothermic or endothermic)
Exothermic which means energy is released to the surrounding
What are the types of respiration and how are they different?
Aerobic (uses oxygen) and anaerobic (doesn’t use oxygen).
What’s the aerobic word and symbol equations? (Balanced)
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
What’s the anaerobic word and symbol equation? (Balanced)
Glucose —> lactic acid + energy
C6H12O6 —> 2C3H6O3 + ATP
Why does anaerobic respiration release less energy than aerobic respiration?
In anaerobic respiration there isn’t any oxygen so the glucose can’t be fully oxidised.
In plants and yeast how does fermentation happen and what is it used for?
When they anaerobically respirate is produces ethanol and carbon dioxide which are used in bread making (to make it rise) and beer brewing (create alcohol).
What is the word and symbol equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast and plants? (Balanced)
Glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
C6H12O6 —> C2H5OH + CO2 + ATP
What’s ATP?
The principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells.
