Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
How does gas exchange occur in humans?
A
As we breathe in, air passes down our trachea into our lungs, where it is diffused into our blood through alveoli into our capillaries. At the same time, the carbon dioxide from our last breath diffuses from the capillaries to the alveoli and out of our mouths.

Q
How do fish breathe?
A
Oxygen rich water flows in through the fish’s mouth, diffuses into the blood and then exits out the gills.
3
Q
What is countercurrent flow?
A
Concurrent flow is how gas exchange occurs in fish. As oxygen rich water flows through the fish’s body one way, blood flows the opposite way. This allows for the blood to be oxygenated to the highest capacity.
