Plant respiration Flashcards
What is cellular respiration?
The process by which cells use oxygen to break down glucose molecules to get chemical energy.
What is chemical energy?
The potential energy stored in ATP molecules that can be released by a chemical reaction
What is glycolysis
The breakdown of glucose by enzymes into two pyruvate molecules.
What are the stages of cellular respiration?
- Glycolysis
2. Either aerobic respiration (if there is oxygen) or anaerobic respiration (if there isn’t oxygen)
What is aerobic respiration?
The two pyruvate molecules formed from glycolysis combine with oxygen to produce CO2, water and 34 ATP
What is anaerobic respiration?
The two pyruvate molecules have no oxygen to combine with, forming lactic acid in animals or Co2 and alcohol in plants to prevent pyruvate buildup.
What gases do plants excrete?
Plants need to excrete excess carbon dioxide and oxygen. Carbon dioxide is a waste product of aerobic respiration in plant cells. Oxygen is a waste product of photosynthesis.
What is the equation for cellular respiration?
glucose + oxygen —–> ATP energy + carbon dioxide + water
