can be transudate or exudate

acute inflammation of the pleura caused by infection -> neutrophils
fibrinous exudate onto pleural surface -> may organise and form fibrous pleura adhesions

- metastatic carcinoma
- malignant mesothelioma (rare): poor prognosis
