Resperation Flashcards
Why do organisms need energy
We need them to carry our life process. Some get there energy from sun (producers) like plants and others from food (consumers)
What is resperation
It’s a series of enzyme controlled activities to release the chemical energy stirred in glucose
What is the classic aerobic respiration formula
Glucose + oxygen - co2 water and lots of energy
What is the formula for fermentation in plant and yeast when there is no oxygen
Glucose- co2 ethanol and littke energy
In animal fermentation equation
Glucose - lactate and a little energy
What is ATP
The meaning is adenine troposphere
It is an energy rich compound that when broken gives energy. It allows living processes to occur. It is made of an adenosine attached to three phosphate. When the third phosphate bond is broken it gives out energy as its an energy rich bond
The equation for ATP
ATP- ADP + Pi + energy
What happens to muscles when the contract
Decrease in length
Why do we calculate percentage in this experiment
Becuase the starting length/ measurement is different
What happens as the atp concentration increases in the muscle issue
The muscle contracts more decreasing in length
Explain the glycolysis experiment this is the starter for both fermintion and aerobic resperation
This takes place in the cytoplasm. The glucose splits into 2 molecules of private ad yields 2 molecules of ATP on the way
How is the process of aerobic resperation continued
When oxygen is present the private molecules move nto the mitochondria (the site of aerobic resperation).By a series of ENZYME CONTROLLED steps the pyruvate breaks into co2 and water.and this yields many molecules of atp (36).This is the complete breakdown of glucose and it yield many molecules of atp.
The summary of aerobic resperation is
In cytoplasm In mitochondria
Glucose ————2 molecules pyruvate OXYGEN HERE———- CO2 and water
2 ATP 36 ATP
Lots of energy
Explain fermentation pathways
Since there is no presence of oxygen the glucose is only partially broken down.Glycoliss happens in the cytoplasm and finishes their. The process of fermentation only yield 2 molecules of atp.
How are fermentation pathways like in animals
(Oxygen depth)
During intense activity like being at the gym.The oxygen amount needed might not be met.So our body carries out fermentation. The product of fermentation in animals is lactate and little energy. This lácate causes pain resulting in muscle fatigue. To remove this discomforting lácate we need oxygen. When this happens it is known as an oxygen dept. The oxygen dept will go away after some rest.

Fermantaion in plants and yeast
Yeast cells deprived of oxygen and plant cells that have been drowned in water (water logged) cannot do aerobic resperation o they do fermentation. The glucose is broken down into 2 molecules of pyruvate and 2 molecules of ATP.This pyruvate will then break down into CO2 and ethanol
Explain the experiment where the yeast cell is put in a beaker
This process is feremention.Yeast is put into a beaker with only glucose prestan and no oxygen. The products are co2 etanol and heat in this instance. This is used in making alcohol and bread making. We take out all oxygen in the glucose and yeast solutions and we put oil to stop any oil coming in.The ethanol is produced. And we can see fr that co2 is produced as it turns lime water cloudy.
Give all info about mitochondria
This is the site of aerobic resperation. The Inter membrane is folded to allow max surface area from aerobicb. Resperation.
Cells that require a lot of energy need to have a lot of mitochondria
