What is the difference between a hazard and a risk for occupational control?

A

Hazard - stubstance or activity that may cause injury or death
Risk - probability that the event will occur, RISK = toxicity x exposure

What are the 4 main occupational respiratory diseases?

A
  1. Respiratory tract cancers - lung cancer, mesothelioma, tracheal/nasal cancer from exposure to carcinogens such as diesel engine exhaust, silica, wood dust, asbestos
  2. Asthma - caused by breathing in chemical fumes, gases, dust or other substances
  3. COPD - chronic airway obstruction from bronchitis/emphysema mainly caused by smoking, dust and fumes
  4. Pneumonia - ILD caused by inhalation of various dust and fibres causing inflammation and scarring of lung. Progressive cough, dry then sputum, SOB. Causes pneumconoises from asbestos, silica
