Q

what are the two ways hypokalemia causes alkalosis?

A

kidneys conserve potassium and H excretion inc

cellular potassium moves of the cells into ECF to try to maintain the serum levels (as K moves out of the cell H enters to maintain electroneutrality)

6
Q

manifestations of metabolic alkalosis?

A

symptoms r/t calcium ionization (hypocalcemia) tinging of fingers and toes, dizziness, hypertonic muscles

dec rr to compensate - may result in hypoxemia
atrial tachy possible

Q

medical management of ,metabolic alkalosis?

A

give pt sufficient chloride so kidneys can absorb sodium w cl (allowing excretion of bicarb)

may give K

Q

what is the cause of respiratory acidosis?

A

d/t inadequate excretion of Co2 with inadequate ventilation
hypoventilation usually

can occur w emergency situations
acute pull deem
aspiration of a foreign objection
atelectasis
pneumonthorax
sleep apnea
admin of o2 to pt with chronic hypercapnia
ARDS
pneumonia

Q

manifestations of respiratory acidosis?

A

inc pulse, RR, BP, feeling of fullness in head, mental cloudiness
cerebral vasodilation and inc flow
ICP may be increased
hyperkalemia (d/t excess H switching in the cell and K out)

Q

what might happen if PaCo2 is chronically >50

A

resp centre becomes relatively insensitive to Co2 and hypoxemia becomes a stimulant for breathing
o2 may remove the stimuli and Co narcosis occurs

16
Q

which compensatory mechanism works faster? resp or metb?

A

metabolic bc lungs can work faster

17
Q

what are the pCo2 ranges?

A

35-45

18
Q

the faster and more deeply a pt breaths the more or less Co2 is blown off?

A

more so level drops

19
Q

most of the CO2 in the blood is what?

A

HCO3

20
Q

what is bicarbonate?

A

measure of the metabolic (renal) component, regulated by the kidney
