Resp failure Flashcards
What is type 1 respiratory failure
Hypoventilation with V/Q mismatch
Pink puffer - thin and hyperinflated
Cause of type 1 respiratory failure
Pneumonia
Pulmonary embolism
Pulmonary oedema
Fibrosing alveolitis
Symptoms of type 1 resp failure
ABCD: Agitation Breathlessness Confusion Drowsiness and fatigue
Signs of type 1
Central cyanosis
PaO2 and PaCO2 in type 1
PaO2 is low
PaCO2 is normal
Treatment of type 1
Oxygen replacement therapy
Treatment of underlying cause
Complications of type 1
Nosocomial infections e.g. pneumonia
Heart failure
Arrhythmia
Pericarditis
What is type 2 respiratory failure
Hypoventilation with or without V/Q mismatch
Blue bloater - strong build and wheezy
Cause of type 2 resp failure
Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Asthma Cerebrovascular disease Opiate overdose Myasthenia gravis Motor neuron disease
Symptoms of type 2

Treatment of type 2
Noninvasive ventilation
Treatment of underlying cause
Complications of type 2
