Resp centre and ABG's Flashcards
What two groups of neurons lay in the medulla oblongata
Dorsal respiratory groups of neurons: trigger inspiratory impulses
ventral respiratory groups: trigger inspiratory and expiratory impulses
How does lung stretch receptors work
sense lung stretch during breathing to terminate breath to prevent over-stretching. It detects abnormal changes in airway mechanical properties.
What are fixed acids
they are non-volatile acids that have to be physically eliminated from the body typically via the kidneys. they are the products of dietary substrates.
What steps do you take if the ABG is not normal
Determine if they have an acidaemia or alkalemia based on the pH.
If metabolic acidosis is present, calculate the anion gap.
Identify the compensatory process
Determine if a mixed acid-base disorder is present
Determine the cause.
What are the two types of acidosis and alkalosis
respiratory acidosis and metabolic acidosis i.e. is it due to volatile acids or fixed acids or bicarb
What are the categories of metabolic acidosis
loss of bicarbonate or the addition of acid
What is non-anion gap metabolic acidosis
it is metabolic acidosis due to loss of bicarbonate, it is due to GI losses and chloride levels rise.
What is the anion gap
It is the uncounted anions minus the uncounted cations is called the anion gap.
What is an embolism
Any intravascular material that migrates from its original location to occlude a distal vessel.
What is a PE
Pulmonary embolism, and the result of migration of all or part of a peripheral DVT to the lungs.
