Resources and sustainbilty Flashcards
what are natural resources
resources that come from nature
fossil fuels
fuels that contain carbon deposited in earth
recycling
processing waste material so that it can be used again
overfishing
taking more fish from nature then can be replaced
what are the causes of overfishing
- modern fishing methods
2.population increase - lack of international laws
what effects of overfishing
- reduces amount of food available
2.affects plants and sea life
3.unemployment and increased poverty
sustainable
able to be used at same rate without threating supply
ways of sustainable fishing
- quotas
- marine protected areas
- monitoring fishing methods
- info awarness
what are quotas
Quotas are
usually given as tons of a certain
fish species that is allowed to be
taken.
how can fishing methods be monitored?
- Set international standards for the mesh sizes of nets
- Make certain kinds of nets illegal.
- Prohibit all destructive fishing methods e.g. bottom trawling.
overgrazing
When too many animals graze on one piece
of land at a rate that is faster than the lands ability to
replenish plantlife.
overstocking
too many animals on a single piece of land.
Degraded
In a poor condition, worn down.
Desertification
the process by which fertile land becomes
desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, or
inappropriate agriculture.
EFFECTS OF OVERGRAZING
Plants can not replenish themselves.
* Bare patches of soil appear and land becomes degraded.
* Soil erosion can occur more readily.
* Dams fill up with soil and sediment.
* Animals may become sickly.
* Animals have fewer offspring.
