Resources And Development - I Flashcards
Define resources.
Everything available in our environment which can be used to stays your needs, provided, it is technologically accessible, economically feasible, and culturally acceptable, can be termed as resource.
Describe the relationship between human beings, nature, technology and institutions.
Humans interact with nature through technology and create institutions to accelerate their economic development.
Biotic resources
Obtained from the biosphere and have life.
Eg.: Humans, flora and fauna.
Abiotic resources
Things composed of non-living things.
Eg.: Metals and rocks.
Renewable resources
Which can be renewed or reproduced by physical, chemical or mechanical processes.
Can be divided into continuous or flow, and biological.
Eg.: Water, wildlife.
Non-renewable resources
Occur over a very long time; take millions of years in their formation.
Can be divided into recyclable and non-recyclable.
Eg.: Fossil fuels, metals.
Individual resources
Owned privately by individuals.
Eg.: Farmer’s lands, water in wells.
Community owned resources
Resources accessible to all members of the community.
Eg.: Village commons, public parks.
National resources
All the resources technically belong to the nation. The country has legal powers to acquire even private property for public good.
Eg.: Water resources, forests.
International resources
International institutions regulate some resources.
Eg.: Oceanic resources beyond 200 nautical miles of the EEZ belong to no individual and no country can utilise these without the concurrence of international institutions.
What right does India have in the EEZ?
The right to mine manganese nodules from the bed of the Indian Ocean that lies beyond the EEZ.
Potential resources
Found in a region, but have not been utilised.
Eg.: Rajasthan and Gujarat’s wind and solar energy development potential.
Developed resources l
Which are surveyed and their quality and quantity have been determined for utilisation.
Eg.: Fossil fuels.
What does the development of resources depend on?
Technology and level of their feasibility.
Stock resources
Materials in the environment which have the potential to satisfy human needs but human beings do not have the appropriate technology to access these.
Eg.: We do not know how to use water as a rich source of energy.
