resources Flashcards
(22 cards)
What are examples of non renewable resources?
Oil, gas, coal, gold, uranium and iron ore.
What are examples of renewable energy?
Geothermal, wind, solar, Tides and Hydroelectric power.
Who was Isaac Newton and what did he discover?
Isaac Newton is a mathematician and a physician and he discovered the 3 laws of motion and the gravitation of the apple.
How does mass affect gravitational pull?
The more matter an object has, the stronger its gravitational pull.
What does the earth do in one day?
the earth rotates in 24hrs
What does the earth do in one year?
The earth takes 365 days to complete one orbit.
What is Gravity?
Gravity is the force of attraction between two objects.
What is Weight?
Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object.
What is Mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object and it always stays the same.
How do you find the the weight of an object?
Weight = Mass x Gravity.
How does the moon create the tides?
The moon creates the tides by gravitational pull.
What is Geothermal energy and how is it made?
- Geothermal energy comes from the heat beneath the earth’s surface.
- The magma under the earth’s surface heats the layer of rocks above and below and some of it is released as steam.
- Then the steam can be used to turn a turbine in a generator, producing electricity.
Explain the key characteristic of a non-renewable resource?
- Cannot be regenerated easily
- Have solids, liquids or gases
- Remain as waste in some other form after there use unless there are subjected to recycling.
Describe the difference between mass and weight?
- Weight is a measurement of the gravitational pull on an object
- mass is the term used to describe how many particles or atoms make up an object.
What is the difference between renewable and non renewable resources?
- Renewable resources are resources that can be renewed within a lifetime
- non renewable resources take a long time to form or cannot be formed again.
How the position of the moon and sun affect the size of the tide on Earth?
The gravity of the moon affects the tides. Low tides happened between each high tide. High tides happen every 12 hours.
What are the phases of the moon?
New moon, waning crescent, waning quarter moon, waning gibbous, full moon, waxing gibbous, waxing quarter moon and waxing crescent.
Why is it important
to use resource sustainability?
The environmental quality in order to have healthy communities clean air.
can you calculate weight given the mass of an object and the gravitational force?
You can calculate it a mass x gravity
What is solar energy and how is it made?
Solar energy is energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy and it is made when solar cells convert sunlight into electrical energy
What is Hydroelectric energy and how is it made?
Hydroelectric energy is produced by falling water that turns turbines to produce electricity and the water supply is held in dams and then released to cause fast-flowing water, which turns the turbines efficiently.
What is the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse?
- The lunar eclipse is when the moon is in Earth’s shadow and appears dark
- the solar eclipse is when the light from the sun is blocked by the moon.
