what is a mineral?
A solid substance found naturally in the earth surface

Ex: sand salt gold
What are veins?
Concentrated areas are specific minerals are called veins
What are ores
Veins often contain ores which are materials with usable amounts of metal in them
Sometimes the process called smelting is used to separate metal in the ore from the other materials. The ore is crushed and heated until It is a liquid.
What is dross?
Dross is the nonmetal part that floats to the top where it can be removed easily
What is malleable?
Malleable is soft and shapeable
What is silver?
Silver is another metal used mainly for money and jewelry and is usually mixed with other metals
What is copper?
Copper is also used for money and good conductor of electricity
What is iron?
Iron is a very plentiful and useful metal because iron is strong and durable as been used to make tools and weapons throughout history
What is aluminum?
Aluminum is very practical because it is strong and lightweight. The transportation industry uses it to make cars and airplanes.
What is soil?
Another important natural resource is soil
What is fallow
resting a field for a season or year
This process replaces the nutrients that had been used up
What is fertilizer?
The additional minerals and chemical fertilizers also produced more for fertile ground
What is ground cover?
A ground cover a low growing crop, such as clover instead of plowing immediately after harvest, farmers began leaving the old stocks in the field until the next spring planting
What is counter plowing?
Counter plowing is a method used by farmers to help keep water from washing soil away
What is fertilizer?
Fertilizer also produces more fertile ground many farmers plant crops that help enrich the soil
