Define Resource management
The control and monitoring of resource so that they do not become depleted or exhausted
Suggest reasons why countries have become “wealthier” and “healthier”

Industrial revolution - more machinery which requires more energy
Population growth - more families want electrical devices so demand increases
More people coming out of poverty - now over 5 billion people in the middle class.

Can be cheaper and food may be available even when out of season. Also grants access to exotic foods e.g. bananas
Disadvantages of importing food from abroad
Bad for the environment - food miles contribute to climate change since lots of pollution
What country has 80% of population working in agriculture?
Kenya - agriculture supports as many as 500,000 people and UK supermarkets employ 70,000 Kenyans directly.
Kenya case study facts
£115 million worth of fruit and veg produced in 2009
So much food is exported, country do not have enough for themselves and therefore country declared national disaster
There are strict regulations for the food and over half of food is thrown away
Define food miles and carbon footprint
The distance that food is exported from its source to its destination. The measure that humans have on the environment.
Explain why global food importing increases the UK’s carbon footprint
As importing increases, food miles increases. A McDonalds Big Mac now has over 7000 miles of food miles to make. Most perishable foods have to travel by plane which is even worse for environment.
