Resource Management / Urban stuff Flashcards
What are the two Case Studies you have learnt that aim to improve food supply?
Indus Basin Irrigation System(IBIS) - Pakistan
Rice + Fish Farming - Bangladesh
What are the benefits of using fish when farming rice?
Their droppings create a good fertiliser for the rice.
They eat any pests that may be on the rice.
They can be eaten by the farmers.
How much of Pakistan’s crop water does the IBIS provide?
40% of crop water requirements of Pakistan.
What is the IBIS made up of?
3 main dams, 85 small dams and 12 linked canals.
What are some challenges of the IBIS?
Water evaporating on hot days.
Farmers taking too much water.
Poor irrigation leads to water loss and soil erosion.
What is hydroponics and aeroponics?
The growing of plants in water or in the air.
What strategies can be used to increase food supply?
Irrigation Bioengineering Appropriate technology Hydroponics Aeroponics
What are some some sustainable food strategies?
Organic Farming Permaculture Urban farming Sustainable meat and fish sources Seasonal Food
What is Organic Farming?
Farming without using artificial chemicals. Instead using manure as fertiliser and using crop rotations.
What are some pros and cons of Organic Farming?
Chemical free food. Decreased river pollution. River wildlife protected.
More labour intensive. More skills/specialism required. Low productivity.
What is Permaculture?
Same as Organic Farming. Using environment rather than artificial chemicals.
What is Urban Farming?
Using space effectively in Urban areas for farming. Such as on balconies and hydroponics/aeroponics.
What are the pros and cons of Urban Farming?
Reduction in food miles. Less pests. Warmer environment.
Limited lateral space. High land costs.
What is Sustainable Meat and Fish Sources?
The limiting on the amount of fish or meat that you capture/breed. This is done using organic methods of farming.
What are the pros and cons of Sustainable Fish/Meat Sources?
Less food wasted. More ethical. Less grain used.
Less food produced. Slower development of cows due to feeding on grass.
