What does Undernutrition/malnutrition mean?

A

Undernutrition/malnourishment- A poorly balanced diet lacking in minerals and vitamins.

Malnourishment- is when you don’t consume a sufficient number of calories per day.

Q

What does water stress mean?

A

water stress- Where demand exceeds supply. This is experienced in more than 50% of England where areas are densely populated and have lowest amounts of annual rainfall.

Q

What does Grey Water mean?

A

Grey Water- waste water from people’s homes that can be recycled and put to good use (irrigation of food).
Almost 50% of the UK’s water is used domestically, but 21% is wasted through leakage.

Q

What does Energy Security mean?

A

Energy Security- The increasing demand of the UK’s energy coming from abroad. UK is increasingly becoming more dependent on imported energy, e.g. Russia.

Q

What does Fracking mean?

A

Fracking- Natural gas trapped in rocks underground that are extracted with the use of water, sand and chemicals at high pressure. They frack the gas from shale rock. This has created many conflicts in England, in particular the arguments about earthquakes and pollution.

Q

Why does the UK import so much food?

A
  • UK-produced food can be expensive because of poor harvests and the price of animal feed.
  • Availability of cheaper food from abroad imported by supermarkets who compete for low prices.
  • Demand for greater choice and more exotic foods.
  • Demand for seasonal produce, all-year round such as strawberries and apples.
  • UK climate is unsuitable for the production of some foods, like cocoa, tea and bananas.

Q

Why are there more resources in HICs than in LICs?

A
  • Colonisation
  • Can afford to import resources
  • HICs have better technology
  • HICs have more power
  • LICs have back rock type
  • Exploitation
  • Demand for resources is higher- technological. innovation + mechanisation.

16
Q

What are the pros and cons of agribusiness and is it sustainable?

A

Pros- lots of job opportunities
Cons- massive carbon footprint
Sustainable? No, big amount of CO2 produced and animals die due to large amount of chemical intake.

17
Q

What is energy insecure?

A

Energy insecurity- a country is reliant on another country for its energy.

18
Q

What is energy surplus?

A

energy surplus- a country that has plentiful supply.

19
Q

What is energy deficit?

A

Energy deficit-a country that does not have enough energy to meet its demands.

20
Q

What region has the highest potential to supply energy in the future?

A

The arctic circle.

21
Q

What are the main economic and environmental costs and impacts associated with exploiting oil and gas from the Arctic?

A
  • Drilling Equipment may sink during summer thaw- so you have to buy new equipment- this is expensive.
  • Strict Environmental controls are needed to prevent damage.
22
Q

How can energy insecurity have potential for conflict?

A

-Shortages pf energy can lead to political conflict when 1 state holds a bigger share pf an energy resource. E.g., Russia controls 25% of the world’s natural gas supplies. it could put pressure on its customers, mostly Western Europe, by raising prices or even cutting off supplies.

23
Q

Describe Iceland’s energy supplies and its plans for the future:

A
  • Iceland uses geothermal power station, energy supplies.
  • Due to tectonic activity, volcanoes create hot steam which turns turbines, which produce electricity of over 300 mega watts.
  • They also use hydroelectric power.

-Iceland plan to make an underwater cable to Europe (gas pipelines for gas, ports for oil, terminals for gas in liquid form)-this will cause price fluctuations and political tensions.
