Resource Management General (26th April) Flashcards
What does Resource mean?
Resource- stock or supply of something that has value or a purpose. 3 most important resources are food, energy and water.
What does Undernutrition/malnutrition mean?
Undernutrition/malnourishment- A poorly balanced diet lacking in minerals and vitamins.
Malnourishment- is when you don’t consume a sufficient number of calories per day.
Undernutrition- is a poorly balanced diet, which lacks in minerals and vitamins.
What does Carbon Footprint mean?
Carbon Footprint- The emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
What does Organic produce mean?
Organic produce- Food grown without the use of chemicals
What does water surplus mean?
water surplus- Where water exceeds demand.
What does water deficit mean?
water deficit- Where water demand exceeds water supply.
What does water stress mean?
water stress- Where demand exceeds supply. This is experienced in more than 50% of England where areas are densely populated and have lowest amounts of annual rainfall.
What does Grey Water mean?
Grey Water- waste water from people’s homes that can be recycled and put to good use (irrigation of food).
Almost 50% of the UK’s water is used domestically, but 21% is wasted through leakage.
What does Water Transfer mean?
Water Transfer- The transfer of water on a large scale across the UK where water demand is needed.
What does Energy Conservation mean?
Energy Conservation- reducing energy consumption by using less energy and existing sources more efficiently.
What does Energy Security mean?
Energy Security- The increasing demand of the UK’s energy coming from abroad. UK is increasingly becoming more dependent on imported energy, e.g. Russia.
What does Fracking mean?
Fracking- Natural gas trapped in rocks underground that are extracted with the use of water, sand and chemicals at high pressure. They frack the gas from shale rock. This has created many conflicts in England, in particular the arguments about earthquakes and pollution.
Why does the UK import so much food?
- UK-produced food can be expensive because of poor harvests and the price of animal feed.
- Availability of cheaper food from abroad imported by supermarkets who compete for low prices.
- Demand for greater choice and more exotic foods.
- Demand for seasonal produce, all-year round such as strawberries and apples.
- UK climate is unsuitable for the production of some foods, like cocoa, tea and bananas.
Why are there more resources in HICs than in LICs?
- Colonisation
- Can afford to import resources
- HICs have better technology
- HICs have more power
- LICs have back rock type
- Exploitation
- Demand for resources is higher- technological. innovation + mechanisation.
What is Agribusiness?
Agribusiness- Intensive farming aimed at maximising the amount of food. Farms are run as commercial businesses. They have high levels of investment and use modern technology + chemicals.
