What is the state if Jamaica’s economy?

A

One of the largest islands in West Indies- population 2.7 million. Economy is based upon range of minerals (bauxite and oil), agricultural products (sugar and rum) and some manufacturing. Classed as upper-middle income country. But!! has slow growth, debt and high unemployment.

How has tourism contributed to Jamaica’s development?

A

Country has become a popular tourist destination (beautiful beaches, sunny climate, rich cultural heritage). Jamaica enjoys good international air communications and is a hub for cruise ships.
Tourism generates taxes, employment and income. Over past few decades, tourism has help raise Jamaica’s level of development and reduce the development gap.

  • In 2014, Tourism contributed to 24% of Jamaica’s GDP, this is expected to rise to 32% by 2024.
  • Income from tourism is US$2 billion each year.

A
  • tourism is main source of employment, provides jobs for 200,000 people, these are mainly around in main tourist towns.
  • employment in tourism helps provide income, which helps to boost local economy.
  • those in employment learn new skills and improve their prospects of a better-paid job in future. QoL for many improved.

How has tourism contributed to Jamaica’s infrastructure?

A

Tourism has led to a high level of investment on north coast where much of country’s tourism is centred.
New port and cruise liner facilities have been built at Trelawney together with new hotel accommodation.
But!! improvements in roads and some parts of the island have been slower and may even remain isolated.

A

The northern tourist areas of Montego Bay, wealthy Jamaicans live in high quality housing with a high standard of living.
However, large numbers of people live nearby in poor housing with limited food supply and inadequate access to fresh water, health care.

A

-mass tourism caused footpath erosion, excessive waste and harmful emissions.
But!! Benefits include conservation and landscaping projects provide job opportunities and encourage people to visit the island.
