Resource Management Flashcards
Learn about water management as a resource.
Why does the UK import so much food?
We don’t have a climate for certain foods all year. We have a very diverse diet so we want more different foods. However this causes UK farmers to go out of business.
What does organic mean?
Food production without additional chemicals. It’s better for the environment. However this is more expensive and leads to less food.
What is an agribusiness?
Places like Lynford House where mass machinery is used to get food production. This has high yield but is bad for the environment.
Name 3 water supply challenges.
More devices using water.
Construction.
Population Growth.
What is water transfer?
Underground pump to redistribute water.
What affects water quality?
Runoff
Factories
Landfill
Sewage
What are the effects of fossil fuels?
They can run for 200-300 years. Costs will rise and it has bad impacts on the Earth.
What are the effects of nuclear?
Lots of jobs are created. Very expensive, up to $18 billion. Waste is a very massive problem
What are the effects of Renewable energy?
Big construction costs. Some farms become tourist attractions. No greenhouse gases.
What is water stress?
When more than 80% of available water used.
What is water security?
Access to clean water to sustain well-being
What is water insecurity?
No access to sufficient safe water supplies.
What are the 4 impacts of water Insecurity?
Water conflict
Pollution
Food production
Industry
Ways to ensure water supply
Water supply- water is redirected but it’s very costly, for example the $79 billion Chinese NS pump.
Desalination- uses a plentiful source. There are environment impacts on ecosystems.
Dams+Reservoirs- Controls water supply but it’s expensive but create stress.
Increasing storage- collects water and doesn’t require transportation. Requires drilling.
Facts about the Chinese north-south transfer system:
300,000 people displaced.
Costs $79 billion
Provides reliable water for 200 million people
