Resource Management Flashcards

Learn about water management as a resource.

1
Q

Why does the UK import so much food?

A

We don’t have a climate for certain foods all year. We have a very diverse diet so we want more different foods. However this causes UK farmers to go out of business.

Q

What does organic mean?

A

Food production without additional chemicals. It’s better for the environment. However this is more expensive and leads to less food.

Q

Ways to ensure water supply

A

Water supply- water is redirected but it’s very costly, for example the $79 billion Chinese NS pump.
Desalination- uses a plentiful source. There are environment impacts on ecosystems.
Dams+Reservoirs- Controls water supply but it’s expensive but create stress.
Increasing storage- collects water and doesn’t require transportation. Requires drilling.

16
Q

What are the 4 Water management methods?

A

Water conservation
Groundwater management
Recycling
‘grey water’

17
Q

Evaluate water conservation?

A

Reduces the 30% water lost in pipes.
Done by fixing leaky pipes and giving smart metres.
Rich people get water.
High costs.

18
Q

Evaluate groundwater management.

A

Getting water from underground with pumps.

LICs can use wells which is cheap and unsustainable.

19
Q

Evaluate recycling.

A

Reusing treated wasteful water. Water is used and treated and reused. HICs do it. It’s hard for LICs as it’s expensive.

20
Q

Evaluate grey water.

A

Reusing water from showers and such. Irrigation of farms. Some people in HICs can do this as it’s difficult.
