Climate Change Flashcards
To learn about the effects and mitigation processes linked to climate change.
State the types, durations and temperature change of milankovitch cycles.
Eccentricity-100,000 years- 5-6°c
Axial tilt-41,000 years- 2-3°c
Precession- 26,000 years- 2-3°c
State the alternative causes of climate change, excluding milankovitch cycles.
Eruption Theory- dependant time period- 0.4-0.7°c change of temp
Solar activity- 11 year periods
Evaluate international agreements as an effective mitigation method.
Example: 2015 Paris agreement, 190+ countries, reducing emissions pledge.
Explain: This should create a reduction in fossil fuel burning which could reduce the effects of climate change
Evaluate: This is not legally binding so countries can opt out (eg. USA) and poorer countries will struggle to implement this.
Explain Alternative Energy Sources
Wind, solar, geothermal and nuclear energy sources.
UK aims to produce 15% of energy from renewable sources.
Reduces emissions massively if 100% renewable energy is used. However this is very expensive.
Explain Carbon Capture+storage
Capturing 90% of carbon emissions from fossil fuel burning. CO2 is out into the ground. Very expensive and requires energy to put into storage.
