Q

How do people exploit the environment

A

Fossil Fuels - coal is removed from the ground, and oil is drilled from the ground as well
Fishing - catch many fish in huge vessels
Farming - now crops or raising cattle
Deforestation - people cut down trees for fuel

Q

How does Deforestation affect the Environment

A

It means more Carbon Dioxide is left in the atmosphere, but it also makes the soil more vulnerable to erosion

Q

Why do Developed Countries use more water

A

They have better water infrastructure, meaning pipes can bring clean water to every house in no time.

Q

What are the 3 Water Supply Problems in the UK

A

Supply and Demand - some areas of the UK with high rainfall have a water surplus however, areas with high population densities are in a water deficit.
Seasonal Imbalance - rain is more frequent in winter than summer leading to droughts sometimes
Ageing Infrastructure - old pipes and sewers are struggling to keep up with the high volumes of water that needs to be treated and transferred to meet demands

Q

What are the 3 Water Supply Problems in Emerging and Developing Countries

A

Unsafe Water - lack of infrastructure causes water to become dirty and not be treated well enough to drink
Polluted Water - rivers are becoming polluted due to mining and fertilisers.
Low Rainfall - some counties have low rainfall, meaning they frequently have droughts and it would be difficult for them to store water as it evaporates quickly

Q

What method is being used to resolve Water Shortages

A

Desalination - where salt water from the sea is cleaned to produce pure water without the salt.

Q

Why do we need to manage Water Sustainability

A

This is because fresh water is non-renewable and is crucial for humans. It is also used for many other things such as irrigating crops and raising cattle.

Q

How can different Stakeholders make Water Supply more sustainable

A

Individuals - they can buy low-flush toilets to minimise water usage. Use rocks to decrease surface run-off and decrease the risk of drought.
Organisations - recycle water for usage in Industries. They can also install Water Meters to see how much water they use.

Q

What are the Problems with Water in China

A

An increase in population has led to a higher water demand. However, China has low rainfall, meaning it can’t keep up with this. They also suffer from droughts
