Resistive Exercise Flashcards
What is strength?
The greatest measurable force that can be exerted by a muscle or muscle group to overcome resistance during a single max effort.
What is power?
Can be either a single burst of high-intensity activity (weight lifter)
What is endurance?
Ability to perform low-intensity, repetitive, or sustained activity over a prolonged period of time
Or sustain a muscle contraction for an extended period of time
Overload principle?
Work a muscle harder than what it is used to in order to increase strength.
What does SAID stand for?
specific adaptation to imposed demands
specific training that mimics a functional activity.
Reversibility principle?
use it or you lose it
What are the three principles of muscle performance?
power
strength
endurance
What are some benefits of resistive exercise?
Enhance muscle performance
Increase strength of connective tissue
Increase bone density
Decrease stress on joints
How long does it take a muscle to recover from acute exercise?
How long after exercise is lactic acid in the muscles?
3-4min
1 hour
What are some indications for isometric exercise?
To decrease muscle atrophy when a joint has been immobile
To begin re-establishing neuromuscular control after soft tissue injury or surgery
To develop postural or joint stability
To increase muscle strength when dynamic resistance exercise can’t be done
What is a isokinetic contraction?
Resistance varies but the speed is constant
What are some precautions for resistive exercise?
Valsalva ManeuverSubstitute Motions Overtraining and OverworkExercise-Induced Muscle SorenessPathological FracturePain Inflammatory conditions Severe Cardiopulmonary Disease s/p MI or CABG should postpone at least 5 weeks
