Motor Learning Flashcards
Can you have good performance without learning a skill?
Yes, you can do well in archery the first time, but it is hard to repeat the second time.
Cognitive stage
- What to do
- How to do it
- Relies heavily on visual feedback
- Requires frequent verbal feedback from therapist
Associative stage
- Decreasing errors while doing the task
- Fine tuning the movements under varying conditions
- Self correcting and problem solving occur
- Requiring less feedback from therapist
Autonomous stage
- Automatic movements
- Easily adapts to variations in the task
- Can progress to more difficult activities by doing a task quicker or longer
- Requires little or no feedback from therapist
Discrete task
has a definite beginning to end
Continuous task
involves repetitive uninterrupted movement
Serial task
a series of discrete tasks that are combined
What is a closed environment?
everything is stable
What is an open environment?
object or pt. is unstable during the task
changing environment
massed
practice time is greater than rest time
distributed
practice time is less than rest time
What is intrinsic feedback?
sensory input of learner
What is extrinsic feedback?
feedback given by the therapist during or after the task; therapist determines the frequency, timing, and type of feedback
What does PNF stand for?
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation
What is the goal for PNF?
Goal is to promote efficiency and quality of movement by facilitation, inhibition, strengthening, and/or relaxation
