Resistance to social influence Flashcards
What is resistance to social influence?
the ways in which individuals attempt to withstand the perceived attempt to threaten freedom of choice - stay independent/ don’t conform or obey
what are the two types of explanations to resistance to social influence?
- locus of control
2. social support
what is locus of control?
- refers to a person’s perception of personal control over their own behaviour
- measured along a dimension of internal to external
features of internal locus of control - 5 points
- a person believes they can affect the outcomes of situations
- take personal responsibility for their actions
- confident
- no need for external approval
- likely to resist social influence
features of external locus of control - 5 points
- a person believes things turn out a certain way regardless of their actions = fate
- do not take responsibility for their own actions
- lack confidence
- seek external approval
- not likely to resist social influence
what is social support?
where people resist social influence if there’s an ally - someone who’s supporting their view
features of social support - 4 points
- having an ally builds confidence
- individual becomes independent
- they avoid normative social influence
- they’re likely to resist social influence/not obey
strengths - research to support |(ss) - Allen and Levine
1.Allen and levine = conducted a study = found that conformity decreased when there was one disstenter - the confederate had thick glasses, invalid social support =resistance enables someone to be free of the pressures of the group
research to support (SS) - Gamson et al
supports the role of dissenting peers = found higher levels of reistance - their pps were in a group = 29/33 rebelled -supports the idea of peer support linking to greater resistance
Research to support locus of control - Spector locus of control is related to NSI
measured loc /predispositon
- in undergrads and found a strong correlation between loc and NSI
