Resistance to Social Influence Flashcards
Name 2 explanations for resistance to social influence.
Locus of Control
Social Support
What is social support?
When a participant see’s other people refuse to obey or conform, making it easier for them to resist social influence.
How did a variation of Milgram’s study show support for social support?
When participants saw confederates refuse to obey orders, obedience fell to 10%.
Limitations of Milgram’s study?
Laboratory study
Lacked ecological validity
Androcentric
What is locus of control?
How much control a person perceives they have over their own behaviour.
Internal locus of control = ?
They have control, confident in their actions.
External locus of control = ?
They do not have control and events are down to luck and fate.
Who is more likely to resist social influence?
High internal LOC.
What did Milgram find that supports LOC?
Found that participants with higher internal locus of control were more likely to resist.
What is a weakness for most research into LOC?
Most research is correlational thus we do know the cause and effect and if there are other extraneous variables that play a part.
