resistance to social influence Flashcards
social support and locus of control
limitation:Locus control may offer a more limited explanation for resisting social influence
E:social psychologists tend to view the social situation as supreme in the explanation of social behaviour. personality is viewed as less significant in “strong” social situations
E:this means that locus of control may play a less significant role in explaining resistance in social influence ,meaning researchers might first look to situational factors to explain resistance to social influence.
L:therefore locus of control and social support both contribute partly to the explanation of resisting social influence.
strength:there is research support
E:in aschs baseline study 36.8% of participants responses conformed with the majority even if the answer was unambiguous. this then dropped to 25% in the presence of dissenting confederates.
E:this is a clear indication of the importance of social support for resisting conformity. the introduction of non-conforming confederates broke the unanimity of the group decreasing the power of NSI.
not all ashs participants demonstrated the same level of resistance so these individual differences could potentialy be explained by the extent to which a participant had an internal or external locus of control.
L:so Aschs Research provides support for the importance of social support for aiding resistance to social influence .
