resistance to social influence Flashcards
social support
= refers to the presence of people who resist the pressure to conform or obey and help other do the same
- Asch’s research showed that conformity is reduced by a dissenting peer (social support).
- The effect is not long-lasting → Asch’s research also showed that if this dissenting peer starts conforming again, so does the true P.
What does this tell us about social support?
- Having an ally can build confidence and allow individuals to remain independent
- Legitimacy is reduced
- NSI is avoided
- Pressure is reduced
Resistance to obedience = social support
Resistance to obedience = Milgram’s study if there was a disobedient conf obedience dropped from 65% to 10%
- Disobedient conf challenges the legitimacy of authority and makes it easier for others to disobey
rotter - locus of control
- Internals believe things that happen are controlled by themselves
(e.g. doing well or badly in an exam depends on how hard you work) - Externals believe things happen outside their control
(e.g. if they fail an exam, they say it was due to a bad teacher)
→ People differ in how they explain successes and failures - there is a spectrum of high internal to high external, and low internal and low external lie in between.
People with internal LOC are more likely to resist pressures to conform or obey.
- They take reponsibility for their actions = act according to their own values
- Self confident, higher intelligence, less need for social approval
- Greater ability to resist social influence
