Resistance to social influence- Social support and research example
External/situational factor
-the presence of people who resist the pressure to conform or obey can act as role models for others to do the same.
Aschs study- when confederate introduced that didn’t conform(said different line was the answer), conformity went down to 5.5% from 37%
Milgrams study- when 2 others refused to continue with shocks obedience went down to 10% from 65%
What is locus of control
The extent to which we believe we have control over events in our lives
Resistance to social influence- locus of control and study support
Internal locus of control-believe you control your own outcomes and take responsibilities for your own actions.
Don’t seek reassurance from others and more likely to resist social influence as high self esteem and intellectual so don’t reply on others opinion.
External locus of control- believe outcomes are out of their control and it’s down the luck or chance.
Seek reassurance from others. Less likely to resist social influence as less confident and lower IQ so reply on others for their opinion.
37% of those who didn’t obey in milgrams study were internal locus of control.
