Resistance to SI Flashcards
Why can people resist social influence
As some are better able to do so or its easier
Why does resistance involve
Disobedience and non-conformity
Why is important to understand resistance
So we can form strategies to avoid destructive types of conformity and obedience which can happen in institutional settings. Staff are trained to conform and obey to GUIDELINES instead of individual people in some cases.
What is meant by social support
When there’s the perception that an individual has assistance and solidarity from other people so is more likely to resist SI
How do Asch’s findings support the role of social support in resistance
When a dissenter doesn’t conform at the beginning of the study conformity drops from 32% to 5.5%. When they dissent later on it drops to 8.5%. This shows the importance of breaking unamnity early on and social support.
How did Milgram’s findings support the role of social support in resistance
When the participant was paired with a confederate it dropped to 10% (those who reached 450v)
Also one even said they didn’t realise that they could refuse to obey - showing how disobedient roles show how it is actually possible to disobey
What did Allen and Levine’s study show
That even social support from someone who is clearly not skilled in the situation is effective in encouraging resistance to conformity
They also found that the response position was important due to unaminity and it shows their confidence
What is a dispositional factor of SI
Locus of control
What does LoC refer to
A measure of a person’s perception of how much they think they control their own life or behaviour.
What does it mean if they have high internal LoC
-they are less likely to conform because they believe they are in control of their own life
What does it mean if they have a high external loc
-they are more likely to conform because they believe others are in control of their destiny. they are more passive
What did Brehony and Geller suggest
It showed that those who are less gender-conforming have a higher internal loc
What did Shute suggest
Those with higher internal loc had expressed anti-drug attitudes
What did Moghaddam suggest
How Japanese people conform more easily and have a higher ex. loc which shows the difference of cultures
What is between LoC and resistance
A correlation
