Resilience factors Flashcards
Promotive factors
-variables associated with positive outcomes across all levels of risk.
-“main effect”
-“social support leads to more happiness”
Protective factors
-variables that disrupt the impact of a risk factor
-implies moderation
Neblett et all. 2012 conceptualization of resilience in youth
First, 3 factors all related to each other: Ethnic and racial identity + cultural orientation + ethnic-racial socialization. They influence directly discrimination + adjustment
Then, self-concept + attribution + coping strategies (that might come from 3 first factors but also might influence them - bidirectional) mediate relationship between discrimination and adjustment
Neblett et all. 2023 conceptualization of resilience in youth
separates into 4 levels
level 1: ERI, ERS, religiosity/spirituality, family/parenting
level 2: coping, critical consciousness, attributions
level 3: then shows that level 2 leads to reject negative self-messages and stereotypes, reframe & reevaluate racism, reduce distress…
level: relationship between racism and mental health is mediate by all these factors.
phenomelological approach
how individual perceives & make meaning out of their experience
OG model: phenomenological variant of ecological systems theroy (PVEST)
1- risk contributors (Race, Sex, SES… These contribute to a net vulnerability level)
2- stress engagement (neighborhood dangers, social support)
3- reactive coping methods (maladaptive vs adaptive. based on on your net vulnerability and your stress engagement)
4- stable coping responses (coping responses start building who you are. ERI, sex role identity, personal identity)
5- life stage outcomes (adverse or productive)
bidirectional between all.
