Residential/Sm Building Foundations Flashcards
Two methods for connecting a foundation wall to a spread footing:
Steel bars and/or a keyway (notch in footing)
Cast in place concrete foundations are connected to wood framing above with:
an embedded threaded anchor bolt closed with a washer and nut.
What are 2 different forces acting on a foundation wall?
Load of the building and load of the soil pushing in
What type of material is used for the footing under a wood foundation wall?
A wide piece of pressure treated lumber with a gravel base
What type of material is used under a CMU foundation wall?
Cast in place concrete footing, typically connected to footing with reinforced steel.
What is another name for a pile cap/grade beam? (What is its function?)
A reinforced cast in place concrete beam (?)
To distribute the load
Where does a sump pump discharge water?
Discharge pipe out of the house
How deep can helical piles be driven?
Almost any depth to required by using extensions
What is the main reason for using a pile and cap foundation?
When you need to go very deep to get enough bearing capacity.
What is the difference between damp proofing and a drainage layer?
Damp proof coating is spray on, will fail when concrete cracks.
Drainage layer is mechanically attached, has drainage pipe at base of wall to take water away.
