Q

how do faults effect fluid migration

A

Faults may act as seals or conduits (a channel for conveying fluid) to fluid migration.

Q

2 ways faults can form seals and trap hydrocarbon accumulations….

A
  1. Juxtaposition or reservoir rock across the fault against low-permeability or impermeable rocks.
  2. Fault rock development creating an area of very low- permeability.

Faults may ‘compartmentalise’ a reservoir.
