conventional hydrocarbon reserves Flashcards
reservoir rocks
rocks that are sufficiently porous to store hydrocarbons and permeable enough to allow water/oil/gas through it relatively easily.
Porosity
the proportion of the rock that is void space
Permeability
the ability of a rock, sediment or soil to permit fluids to flow through it. In the oil industry it is usually measured in Darcys (D) or milliDarcys (mD). (0.987 x 10-12 m2 = 1 D)
Porosity eq
((total volume – solid volume) × 100) /
total volume
Primary porosity
develops at the time the rock was first formed. For example, gaps between grains of sand on a beach, that become pores when that sand is lithified.
Secondary porosity
gaps in the rock. after it has formed.
are permeability and porosity directly related?
vaguely but not directly.
