Research Types Flashcards
Quantitative Research
Research methods in which children are observed in their behaviors are counted or rated numerically.
i.e. Correlational and experimental research
Correlational research
Research that studies relationships among two or more characteristics or behaviors factors. Attempts to determine if factors are related.
Experimental Research
Research that studies causes, characteristics or behaviors.
Researchers intervene in one out of two groups and then compares outcomes of the groups. Often used to determine efficacy of an intervention with caution must be used.
Longitudinal Studies
Research in which a group of children is studied over a long period of time to observe changes in behavior and development in various areas.
Qualitative Research
Research that gives thick descriptions of children’s development that capture all aspects of their lives. Rich and detailed narratives that illustrate a child’s development.
Formative Assessments
The evaluation of children’s learning and development overtime and relatively frequently in order to immediately improve services to individual children. i.e. Midterms
Summative Assessment
An overall assessment of children’s growth after they have completed the school year or some other long period of learning or teaching.
I.e., Final exam
Types of Formative Assessments - Quantitive
Developmental checklist-
Teachers Rates child’s attainment of developmental milestones i.e. resolving conflicts of playing/cooperating with peers.
Time sampling-
Teacher observes children of regular time intervals and records behaviors or interactions that occur during that period.
Event sampling
Teacher records the number of times and event or a behavior occurs.
Types of Formative Assessments - Qualitive
Anecdotal records teacher writes detailed objective notes of everything in a particular child says or does during a classroom observation.
