Research Terminology Flashcards
Deductive
form of reasoning in which conclusions are formulated about particulars from general or universal premises
E-Value
average number of times in multiple testing that one expects to obtain a test statistic at least as extreme as the one that was actually observed
Inductive
form of reasoning in which a generalized conclusion is formulated from particular instances
Mean
average score within a distribution
Mean Deviation
measure of variation that indicates average deviation of scores in a distribution from the mean
Median
center score in a distribution
Mode
most frequent score in a distribution
Probability
“p” factor
chance a phenomena has of occurring randomly.
A statistical measure, shown as “p”
P-Value
is not probability, it is value of statistical significance of testing
Randomized Clinical Trial
“gold standard” in research design
Reliability
extent to which a measure, procedure or instrument fields the same result on repeated trials
Retrospective
compare to past evaluations
Standard Deviation
measure of variation that indicates typical distance between scores of a distribution and the mean
Validity
degree to which a study accurately reflects or assesses specific concept that the researcher is attempting to measure
