Research software Flashcards
When might software be used to help collect data?
Logging data from sensors
Keep track of stimulus intensities/control them, as well as logging the response
What can PsychoPy be used for?
Basic psychology experiments.
Can arrange sequences of events to be presented on-screen.
Good if little to no programming knowledge.
What can PsychToolbox be used for?
Enables low-level access to computer graphics functions.
Has high timing precision.
Allows generation of any kind of stimulus.
What programming language does PsychToolbox use?
MATLAB
What does image analysis software do?
Processes and analyses image based data
What is Sholl analysis?
Type of image analysis
Image is binarised (high contrast created and sections created)
Number of datapoints counted in each section
What can ImageJ be used for?
Image analysis:
Cell counting (from high contrast image).
Has many plug-ins for different specialities.
What can Open CV be used for?
High level visual processing, e.g. object/people/face tracking.
Usually for real-time computer vision applications
What can Excel be used for?
Basic summary statistics
Check results from other packages (sanity checks)
What are the disadvantages of Excel?
Time-consuming
Inefficient for large scale projects
What can SPSS be used for?
More statistics tests than Excel
Specifically designed for statistics (most tests available)
Mostly used for undergrad/masters projects
Easy to use
Intuitive
What are the disadvantages of SPSS?
Can be time consuming
Doesn’t allow for complex modelling
What can R be used for?
Statistics - most complete package
Programming language
What can JASP be used for?
Statistics
Runs R, but point and click
Covers frequentist and Bayesian statistical methods (psychology)
Give some examples of reference management software
Mendeley
Endnote
Zotero
