Positivism
argues that the methods of the natural sciences are applicable to the study of societies
Positivism (basic principles)
- The social world exists externally and is viewed objectively;
- Research is value-free;
- The researcher is independent, taking the role of an ‚objective analyst‘.
Interpretivism/constructivism
argues that there are fundamental
differences between the natural sciences and the societies. The logic and methods of the natural sciences are not applicable to the study of societies. I
is concerned with investigating and understanding the meanings that people give to their actions
Interpretivism/constructivism (basic principles)
- The social world is constricted and is given meaning subjectively by people;
- The researcher is part of what is observed
- Research is driven by interest

Positism =
Quantitative Research
Mixed method research
builds on the idea that the combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches can be fruitful for studying specific research questions
- Most common: The sequential use of qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Less common: The parallel use of qualitative and quantitative methods.
Mixed Methods
Either in the sequence of induction and deduction – using qualitative methods to create hypothesis and after quantitative methods to test the hypothesis.
OR
as in-depth investigation after a hypothesis has been tested an validated to explore very specific nuances.
Methods
- Sampling methods (stratified, cluster)
- Statistical methods (regression, t-test)
Methodology
Box of all applied methods
Epistemology
The entire research study you do from theory via methodology to results and conclusions
