Research On Duration Flashcards
Who did research on STM
Margaret and Lloyd Peterson
How did Peterson and Peterson conduct research.
On each trial a student was given a consonant syllable (e.g YCG) and a three digit number.
They were told to count backwards from this number until told to stop counting
How many students and trials were there in peterson and petersons study
24 students
8 trials
What are the findings frim peterson and petersons study
After 3 seconds average recall is about 80%
after 18 seconds it was about 3%
What do peterson and peterson suggest
Peterson and Peterson’s findings suggest that STM duration maybe about 18 seconds unless we repeat information over and over
Who did research on ltm
Bahrick
How many pp did Bahrick study
392 american university graduates
How was Bahricks research conducted
The graduates were shown photographs from their high-school yearbook
and for each photograph participants were given a group of names and asked to select the name that matched the photographs.
What did Bahrick find?
Bahrick found that 90% of the participants were able to correctly match the names and faces, 14 years after graduating
60% of the participants were able to correctly match the names and faces 47 years after graduation.
What does Bahricks research suggest
Bahrick concluded that people could remember certain types of information, such as names and faces for almost a lifetime.
What does Bahricks research support
These results support the multi-store model and the idea that our long-term memory has a lifetime duration (at least 47 years) and is semantically encoded
