Research Methods - Variables Flashcards
What is the independent variable?
It refers to the aspect which has been manipulated by the re-searcher or simply changes naturally to have an effect on the DV which is then measured.
What is the dependent variable?
The dependent variable is the aspect of the study which is measured by the researcher and has been caused the change the IV.
What is operationalisation?
This refers to the act of a researcher clearly defining the variables in terms o now they are being measured.
What are extraneous variables?
An extraneous variable refers to any other variable which is not the IV that affects the dv and does not vary systematically with the IV. These variables do not confound result of a study, but make them harder to detect
What are confounding variables?
These do not change systematically with the impact of the DV, but it becomes difficult for the researcher to see the original of the impact of the DV.
What are demand characteristics?
These refer to any cue the researcher or the researcher may give which makes the participants feel like they can guess the aim of the investigation. This causes them to not act naturally. This affects the validity of the results.
What are investigator effects?
This refers to any unwanted influence from the researchers behaviour either conscious or unconscious on the DV. This includes a variety of factors,
